Asset Classes

An equity is an ownership stake in a company. Buying a share makes you a part-owner with a claim on future profits and, in the event of liquidation, residual assets. Equities are listed and traded on exchanges such as NYSE, NASDAQ, or LSE. Their value reflects investor expectations about future earnings — when growth expectations rise, prices tend to rise; when they fall, prices fall.
